Sunday Social

I'm linking up again for Sunday Social! This week is all about growing up and teenager-dom. You know you've been dying to know all about my teenage years.

1. What was your first car? My 16th birthday was on Mother's Day and I went to camp 3 weeks later so I was totally convinced I wouldn't get a car until July when I got home from camp. When we were out for my birthday/Mother's Day my card from my dad had a picture of my car in it! I was SHOCKED. For two years I was the proud driver of a 1992 Dodge Spirit.
My step-sisters, me, and the Spirit
2. Who was your favorite childhood teacher? I have a few, but I mainly like them because they're easy to make fun of. I know it sounds AWFUL, but seriously, if you had had these teachers, you'd make fun of them too.

3. Were you involved in any sports/extracurricular activities? Share pictures if you can! In late elementary school I played Upward Basketball (my first sport ever, y'all). In middle school I played tennis and volleyball and was pretty terrible at both, but I still love them. Then in high school, I focused on dancing and senior year I was on drill team (or dance team for you non-Southerners). Unfortunately, I don't have any pictures online... Bummer.

4. What was your favorite birthday party? That is an excellent question. My 7th grade/13th birthday party was pretty awesome. My middle school bestie's birthday was a week after mine and another of our friend's birthdays was in June so we had a triple pool party at said bestie's grandparents' house. Then all the girls were invited to stay at her house for a sleep over. We had a blast.

5. Who was your teen celebrity crush? There have been MANY. Orland Bloom, Heath Ledger (RIP), Freddie Prinze Jr, Zach Hanson, JC Chasez, Nick Carter, and I'm sure there are others...

6. What show/movie did your parents not allow you to watch? Anything on MTV (ie Celebrity Death Match), but I still ended up seeing it somehow. And Titanic. I was definitely in like 4th grade when that came out and one or two of my friends saw it and the rest of us couldn't. Very upsetting.

Bandwagon Hopping

So I've been loving reading all of these "If You Really Knew Me" type posts on the blogs I'm following, so I'm doing one, too!

If you really knew me, you'd know...

I broke my ankle 10 years ago getting off of a bus. Can you say embarrassing? I was at a private school and they hosted "Fish Camp" for all of the freshmen. It was a disastrous day. I started the day off by falling out of a bus. A girl stepped on a rusty nail and had to go get a Tetanus Shot and one of the guys got hit in his... nether region, if you catch my drift. My ankle was SOOOO swollen and bruised. It was disgusting. I could barely get my tennis shoe off my right foot. When I went to get an X-ray, my ankle was too swollen to actually tell if it was broken. Then I got to start my freshman year of high school, in Texas August heat, on crutches.

I'm a social media fiend! I spent more time on Facebook in college than any of my friends and they made sure to make fun of me for it. Now I'm hoping to get a job sometime in the future in social media.

I love crafting. Love love LOVE.

I'm SUPER competitive. A lot of the time it's internal, but sometimes (like War Canoe at camp) it's very outward and intense.

I think it's weird that Rory didn't rush when she went to Yale on Gilmore Girls. I mean, maybe it's just the southerner in me that knows sororities are a huge deal, but you can't tell me Emily Gilmore didn't belong to a sorority and her lifelong dream was for her daughter/granddaughter to be in that same sorority. And yes, Yale does have sororities. One of my camp friends was a Pi Phi there.

I love the Bullseye in Entertainment Weekly. I think it's hilarious.

I'm a major homebody. I didn't even look at out of state schools when going to college. I love Texas and if I go out of state for grad school it'll be a state that touches Texas.

I love cats. But not as much as that crazy e-harmony chick that cried about cats. That's a little excessive.

I consider myself to be a fierce friend. I love my friends. I want them to be happy at all times. I love spending time with my friends. Friends, friends, friends. Very important to me.

I HATE scary movies. I can't even watch the trailers for them. At the movie theater, I either get on my phone or stare at my popcorn. I'm a huge baby about scary movies. Not a fan. At all.

I think my dog is the cutest, funniest dog ever. You can't convince me otherwise. He's a corgi. He's handsome. He smiles. He wins. All other arguments are invalid.

I love college football season. I can't wait for its return! I'm mad TCU has a bye week the first week, but I'm still pumped. Go frogs.

Have you jumped on the bandwagon yet?

New Dreams in Life

Last week I joked on Twitter about wanting to become the gatekeeper at Mystic, the camp I've loved and attended for 13 (technically 14) years. A newer camp friend of mine tweeted back that I'd have to get in line behind her for the job and I replied that we could rebuild the gatehouse for a couple of us to live in (because if you've seen it, let's be real: it's tiny).

Today though, I was thinking seriously about what I could do with my life since obviously nothing in the job department seems to be working out these days. Then it dawned on me: where's the camp store in Tyler? For the past few summers at Mystic, girls of all ages, including counselors have been sporting the cutest t-shirts from a little camp store in San Antonio (about an hour drive from Mystic). This store doesn't just do camp stuff (because then they'd only have business for about 4 months of the year), they do hometown/neighborhood school shirts and shorts and other cute stuff to cheer on the home team.

Why couldn't I do that? In Tyler? It's funny because one of the ladies who owns this little store is actually from Longview, about 45 minutes away from Tyler. She was super nice and if I needed help or had a question, I'm almost positive she could answer it (especially since we wouldn't necessarily be competing from 5-6 hours away from each other.

But seriously. There are 2 major camps here in East Texas that tons of kids go to. There's Mystic, Waldemar, and Longhorn, where I know for a fact tons of Tyler kids go. There's two public high schools and a good number of private schools. I could make some cute shirts for the drill teams and cheerleaders. And then on top of selling school stuff year round, I could make some cute camp clothes and sell other cute camp accessories. And since I'll always be tied to Mystic somehow (Sarah will be an aide this year aka her last year as a camper for those of you non-campers. I have a little second cousin there too who's still got 8 years as a camper left), I'll always have an "in" with the big camp trends.

It's just a matter of if I can really do this and the fact that I have ZERO money to do this. But seriously, I could totally do this. Plus I have a degree in Ad/PR so marketing would be a cinch, right? We'll see. This is totally a dream right now, but who know in a few years. This would be an excellent "mom" job (aka something to do when I'm a mom and hopefully my kids are going to camp). But I'd love to do it now too... I guess we'll just have to see.
